The Aliyev–Pashinyan memorandum signed in Washington on Aug. 8 is more of a time-bomb for the future existence and development of Armenian statehood than a staged act aimed at masking a severe legitimacy crisis, an event that has received tacit or explicit support from global decision-making centers.
The declaration envisions the creation of a major transit corridor called the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP). In reality, it becomes a new highway for Azerbaijan to export energy resources, providing a more direct link to Turkey and, subsequently, to Europe. Passing through Armenia’s territory, this corridor implies a reduction of Armenia’s territorial sovereignty and poses the grave risk of extraterritorial control.
For Moscow and Tehran, U.S. involvement in the so-called “Zangezur Corridor” appears to be a blow to their control over the North–South trade route, turning the region into a zone of great power rivalry and potential clashes. At the same time, the loyalty shown by Moscow and Tehran raises suspicions of possible latent consensus between Russia and the U.S., Russia and Iran, or even Iran and the U.S. regarding this route.
Instead of becoming a bridge of peace, Armenia risks turning into the frontline of a deep geopolitical confrontation. The dangers of Armenia’s Syrianization or Lebanonization are becoming increasingly visible.
Genesis Armenia reiterates that Armenia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty are not subject to bargaining. Any form of extraterritorial control over our land contradicts the Constitution and the national interest.
Genesis Armenia supports the unblocking of regional communications only under conditions of equality and respect for sovereignty. However, this memorandum excludes the issue of Artsakh, the return of prisoners of war, does not oblige Azerbaijan to reciprocally open communications, and in practice accepts all of Baku’s preconditions — granting Azerbaijan even the lifting of U.S. sanctions.
We declare that sovereignty and security of the Republic of Armenia cannot be sacrificed in the name of peace. Such agreements have neither legal nor constitutional basis, threaten the national-state interests of Armenia, Artsakh, and the Armenian people, and must be unequivocally rejected.
