The pursuit of justice as a foundation for security

The Armenian Genocide remains one of the most tragic atrocities of the 20th century, organized, coordinated, and carried out by the state of Turkey. The mass killings, forced deportations, and the destruction of an entire people’s cultural and physical existence demand condemnation and restitution.

Turkey’s continued refusal to officially recognize the Armenian Genocide, along with its failed attempts to revise history, perpetuates the legacy of this crime against humanity to this day. This denial rooted in hostility toward Armenians is not a matter of historical dispute, but an ongoing failure that obstructs understanding, dialogue, and potential reconciliation between the Armenian and Turkish peoples, while also undermining trust. Therefore, the recognition of the Armenian Genocide by Turkey must become a central issue on the agenda of dialogue between Armenia and Turkey, and between the Armenian and Turkish peoples, since genuine societal and interstate normalization cannot take place without recognition and condemnation of this most painful chapter of history, as well as the establishment of clear security guarantees that such crimes will never be repeated.

The shadow of Genocide and its denial, which has already lasted for 111 years, is also reflected in recent events, such as the loss and depopulation of Artsakh. The parallels between past and present demand not only the immediate and unconditional recognition of historical crimes, but also practical steps to overcome their present-day consequences.

The pursuit of justice is not merely a slogan, nor simply an act of respect toward one’s history and ancestors; it is a prerequisite for preventing the recurrence of historical tragedies in the modern world. It is a foundation for civilized dialogue between states, for possible reconciliation, and for development.

The geographical scope of international recognition of the Armenian Genocide should be expanded, but the key to success lies in the establishment of a strong, secure Armenia—economically and technologically developed, socially just, and supported by a healthy, progressive younger generation.
